Club day is every Sunday rain or shine (essential to wear gumboots in winter). Learners shoot at 11.30am. Archers shooting at 20 metres and beyond shoot at 09.30am but need to be there by 09.15am to register their distance and help set up targets.
Beginners advance by shooting a qualifying score at each distance. A qualifying score is 400 points or more from 10 ends of 6 arrows each (ie possible score of 600).
The range is also open on Tuesday afternoon from 3.30pm for practice but club members must have their own equipment and set up their own targets.
As our section name suggests we shoot older style firearms which use Black Powder as a propellant. This powder is usually only encountered now in fire works, but has hundreds of years of history behind it , and is characterized by its smell and copious amounts of smoke.
Cowboy Action Shooting, a sport created in California in 1982, is run under international rules set be 'The Single Action Shooting Society' of the USA.
Cowboy Action Shooting recreates life in the Wild West by shooting a course of fire designed to depict an old west historical shootout, a movie scene or just someone's idea of the wild west.
IPSC is a practical shooting sport that involves shooting on the move, negotiating obstacles and employing tactics to hit multiple cardboard targets.
IPSC athletes must blend accuracy, power, and speed into a winning combination. Targets are 75 centimeters by 45 centimeters with a 15 centimeter center representing the "A zone" or bullseye.
ISSF (Olympic style) pistol events are shot over 10m, 25m and 50m ranges. At RR&GC we shoot several events including 25m pistol, centrefire, rapid fire pistol and the standard match.
ISSF pistol is the first discipline new shooters learn at our club, so there is a big focus on safety.
The RR&GC provides the nearest sighting in range to Palmerston North.
High powered rifle shooting is limited to the hours between 9am and 5pm standard time, and until 6pm during daylight saving.
